Oil on canvas : Rural landscape of Punjab on display

Member National Assembly Shaista Pervaiz Malik inaugurated the exhibition, which depicted the paintings of senior artist Muhammad Gulzar, and lauded the efforts of the artist. On the occasion, Kinnaird College Vice Chancellor Dr Rukhsana David, Lahore Arts Council Executive Director Captain (r) Atta Muhammad Khan along with a large number of people were also present.

The artist used oil on canvas as the medium for all his artworks displayed in the show. Talking to Daily Times, Gulzar said he remembers Lahore when the city was like a ‘village’ and not much development was done. “The purity of rural culture of Punjab was the prime theme and inspiration behind the paintings. There is no artificiality or hypocrisy in village life, as villagers entertained themselves with native traditions and rich culture,” he added.

Through his paintings, Gulzar showed rivers, plains, nature and landscape of the villages of Punjab. Shedding light on the painting “Village Women”, the artist maintained that women of villages were extremely strong as they perform number of tasks from dawn to dusk, adding that the painting was actually a tribute to workingwomen who are contributing in the welfare of our country.

Some of the artwork on display showed animals including horses, eagles, camels and buffalos, whereas cities including Hafizabad, Head Marala, Kasur, Sialkot and Lahore were also painted by the artist.

The exhibition will continue until Feb 5.
