Uganda: Ronex Ahimbisibwe Explores Realism, Abstract Art

Perception Or Reality - An Exploration Of What We Believe And What We Perceive, is an exhibition viewing from January 15 to February19 at the Afriart gallery in Kamwokya.

The exhibition showcases the work of Ronex Ahimbisibwe, an abstract painter, sculptor and experimental photographer. In one corner were fabric-inspired paintings and metallic sculptures in the other.

It was something the artist has not done before - not being a realism artist, Ahimbisibwe says this exhibition is looking for answers; he says many people have a problem with abstract art, "they think it is escapism, thus this exhibition is my way of being a realist or finding a way between."

For instance, he notes that much as many people always claim never to understand abstract art, they do appreciate and understand the kitenge fabric. In the pieces showcased, the fabric was the abstract collage with a few paintings to offer the realism.

On a piece like Stand By A Productive Lady, the painter seems to mirror a traditional African family where men looked for food as women mostly created order in the home. The picture features a man standing behind a woman presumed to be the wife, with a basket of fruits.

Other pieces such as Strike A Pose or Life were just as amazing especially for the simplicity and little touch of colour. The artist applied a less-is-more technic, relying more on the colours of the fabrics in the background.

Ahimbisibwe is known for brilliant abstract works; like in this exhibition, he has many paintings where his subject matter revolves around an African woman.

His style, though, is more of a junction; that place where art meets activism. He recycles a lot of waste; metal, paper and wood, among other things.

Much as he has exhibited a lot of times, Ahimbisibwe tries to reinvent himself with each showcase to make sure his audience gets a different feel from the past shows. And it worked.
