is month the North Suburban YMCA's Community Gallery features a show of watercolor, acrylic, and oil paintings by Elena Crumbaugh. The public is invited to a reception for the artist on Wednesday, February 17, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the North Suburban YMCA, located at 2705 Techny Road in Northbrook.
Crumbaugh was born in Novosibirsk (the capital of Siberia) in Russia, among people who loved art. Growing up she was able to see some of the world's greatest artworks, and art became an important part of her life. She started taking lessons at the age of eight and continued her education by studying art and figure drawing, and being tutored by nationally recognized artists.
Although she began a career as an engineer in nuclear medicine, she never stopped painting. Her preferred medium is watercolor and she participated in regional exhibitions for non-professional artists. After coming to America in the 1990s to earn an MBA, Elena began working in finance, but could not set down her paint brushes. She continued developing her painting skills by studying with David Gista in Highland Park and at his Art School in Glencoe, with Eileen Jorgensen at her art studio in Arlington Heights, and by attending an art workshop at Savigni Sur Braie, France. She also painted every week at the Palette and Chisel Academy in Chicago.
"I find inspiration in all of nature and particularly in flowers I grow in my backyard," says Ms. Crumbaugh. "I love to investigate the works of old masters by copying their paintings. I am fascinated with the timelessness and symbolism of art that speaks in a way that transcends languages and cultures."
All of the paintings in the show are for sale, and a portion of the purchase price will benefit the North Suburban YMCA's Visual Arts Program. Next month, the gallery will feature paintings by Tanya Klatt. Contact Cathy Winnie at cwinnie@nsymca.org for more information.
