CM to launch heritage museum in Fort Kochi

The heritage museum at Bastion Bungalow in Fort Kochi will be thrown open to visitors on Tuesday by Chief Minister Ommen Chandy.

The 450-year-old structure, said to be one of the oldest buildings in Kerala, was being used as the official residence of Fort Kochi RDO till it was handed over to State Archaeology Department in 1999 and declared a protected monument. The museum will showcase different aspects of Ernakulam district, the first in a State-wide project where each of the 14 districts will have a heritage museum.

The Minister for Culture K C Joseph will preside over Tuesday’s function.

The Bungalow was part of the first Portuguese-built fort that was taken over by the Dutch. The British named it Bastion Bungalow, a residence-cum-office for government officials. The heritage museum in Kochi will portray Kochi as a melting point of around 25 cultures who made it their home. Also on show will be influence of different religions, Kochi port and its history.
